Hannah James and Sam Sweeney, folk club 26/09/11

Saw these two at the (Not) The White Horse Folk Club in Beverley last night… and stunningly talented they were too.

Sam is an exceptional fiddler (by that I mean he’s good on the violin, not at avoiding the taxman) and Hannah is a superb accordionist and singer, and also an out-of-this-world clog dancer. They’re that sort of duo who, if you couldn’t see them, would make you think there are more of them than just two. They create a lovely rich sound, which is boosted by Hannah’s amazing left hand. Folk club regular Dave Hill, who has been playing the accordion for 40 years, said he’d not seen anything like it.

They have good folk pedigree in that Sam has appeared in Bellowhead (quite simply my favourite band EVER) and Hannah has performed with the Demon Barber Roadshow. Catch ’em if you can – highly recommended. For more info check out www.hannahandsam.co.uk.

I'm Sam Martyn, a folk singer, musician and artist from Hull. I'm a member of Hull folk band Beggar's Bridge, and I'm also in the White Horse Ceilidh Band. I've been a regular at the The White Horse Folk Club in Beverley for a good few years now, too. I play piano, low and high whistle, and harmonium. Influences include June Tabor (quite simply a heroine of mine) and Eliza Carthy. In September 2012 I released my first album, Drifting on Out, while Land and Sea followed in February 2016 - both are available to buy on CD via PayPal in my website shop, or from iTunes.
